Driver's education in Massachusetts is the program a driver under 18 must complete before a Class D license: 30 hours of classroom instruction, 12 hours of behind-the-wheel driving, 6 hours of observation, and a 2-hour parent or guardian class. A parent or guardian who completed that class within the past five years does not take it again. At 18 or older, driver's education is not required. A learner's permit is still required before the road test.

Package 1 is the full teen course. Package II fits a student whose classroom hours were already finished at another school. Package III fits a student who still needs the classroom course. What each package includes is listed below. Current prices are on the programs page.

Massachusetts does not publish one tuition that every driving school must charge. JMC prices are the package cards on the programs page. Registry fees are separate. The Class D road test fee is $35 and is not refunded if you fail: Schedule your road test. The learner's permit exam has its own Registry fee: Apply for a passenger Class D learner's permit. JMC road test sponsorship is a separate, non-refundable fee and depends on the test location.

Under 18, the Registry requires the learner's permit to be held for 6 months with a clean record before the road test. That wait comes with driver's education: 30 classroom hours, 12 hours behind the wheel, 6 hours of observation, and a 2-hour parent class. Six months is the minimum. How fast the classroom finishes depends on the session you join. At 18 or older, driver's education and the 6-month hold are not required. At 18, driver's education is not required for a Class D license. A Massachusetts learner's permit is still required, and parental consent is required only under 18. No. The road test uses a Massachusetts learner's permit. A Massachusetts resident can convert a learner's permit issued less than 2 years ago by another state, the District of Columbia, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory. The Registry does not convert a permit from any other country. Someone without an out-of-state permit applies for a new Massachusetts permit, which requires a passed permit exam and no license or permit from another state. Be at the JMC office a couple of minutes before your scheduled time. If you have a B restriction on your permit, glasses or contacts are mandatory.

You must provide 48 hours notice during office hours (2 business days) to reschedule a lesson at no cost. Failure to provide proper notice will result in loss of the lesson and payment.

Yes. For new students as of May 1, 2019, the MA Registry requires a mandatory 2-hour parent/guardian class. It must be completed before any road lessons begin, but it does not need to be completed before classroom sessions.

For your first behind-the-wheel lesson, you must bring your valid physical learner's permit. Digital copies are not accepted by state law. You should also wear closed-toe shoes and bring any corrective lenses if required by your permit.

Road test sponsorship is JMC Driving School providing the training car and a certified instructor for a Massachusetts road test.

Call (781) 373-1730 before you buy, and confirm that the area and the date are still open. Then buy the sponsorship for that location on the road test page. Saturday tests are at the JMC office in Waltham. Weekday tests are at Registry sites. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 10am to 5pm. The sponsorship fee is non-refundable.

The Registry requires a two-week wait before another Class D road test, and an applicant can attempt no more than six Class D tests in 12 months. The Registry's $35 road test fee is not refunded after a failure. The JMC sponsorship fee is also non-refundable, so another test in a school car means buying that location again and calling the office for a new date. Yes. JMC Driving School offers road test sponsorship at our Waltham office and RMV locations in Watertown, Lowell, Haverhill, Lawrence, and Milford. We offer Saturday test sponsorship at the JMC office or weekdays at certain RMV locations. Contact the office for current fees and availability. Road test fees are non-refundable.

Yes. Calling first is recommended so we can confirm availability, preferred RMV area, timing, and any requirements before moving forward.

Absolutely. We cover all rules, regulations, and maneuvers during our lessons. We advise experienced drivers to have at least 2 lessons before a road test.

Per Massachusetts RMV rules, students must be at least 15 years and 9 months old before the first day of class. A valid learner's permit is required before any road (behind-the-wheel) lessons can be scheduled.

When registering online, the account should always be created in the student's name with the student's information. A parent/guardian can complete payment, but the profile itself must match the student.

We accept major credit and debit cards for online payments. You may also pay in person at our Waltham office during posted office hours (Mon-Fri 10am-5pm).

Yes. A $400 deposit is required before the start of classroom sessions for the full program package. The remaining balance is due by the last day of class.

If gas prices reach $4.00 or higher, a $5.00 surcharge per road lesson is added to help cover fuel costs.

JMC Driving School fees cover your classroom, road lessons, observations, and certificate. Separate from that, the Massachusetts RMV charges $50 for the license and $35 for the state exam (total $85). RMV fees are paid directly to the state, ideally online before your exam date.
